Farm Biosecurity
Prevention is cheaper than treatment. Biosecurity is the practice of keeping diseases away from your birds.
1. External Shield (Boundary)
- Restrict Access: No unauthorized visitors. Human boots are the #1 carrier of disease.
- Vehicle Disinfection: Use a disinfectant spray or tire dip for any vehicle entering the farm premises.
2. Personnel Hygiene
- Footbaths: Use a Potassium Permanganate (red water) footbath at the entrance of every shed. Change the water daily.
- Hand Wash: Workers must wash hands with soap before entering and after leaving any shed.
- Dedicated Clothing: Use separate farm-only footwear and overalls.
3. Operational Discipline
- Dead Bird Disposal: Remove carcasses immediately. Bury them at least 4 feet deep with lime, far away from the sheds.
- Rodent Control: Keep the area around the sheds free of tall grass and spilled feed to avoid attracting rats.
- Water Quality: Clean water tanks weekly. Use chlorination tablets (5g per 1000L) to keep water pathogen-free.
