Managing Flock Survival
Mortality trends change as birds grow. Identifying the phase-specific risks is key to prevention.
Week 1: The Brooding Phase
- Target: < 1.2% cumulative.
- Common Causes: Omphalitis (Yolk sac infection), transit dehydration, cold stress.
- Action: Pre-heat the shed to 32°C before arrival. Provide glucose and electrolyte water immediately.
Weeks 2-3: The Growth Phase
- Target: < 0.05% daily.
- Common Causes: Coccidiosis, IBD (Gumboro), metabolic issues.
- Action: Strict litter management to keep it dry. Follow the vaccination schedule strictly. Ensure fresh air through proper curtain management.
Weeks 4-6: The Finishing Phase
- Target: < 0.2% daily.
- Common Causes: Ascites (North India winter), Heat Stroke (Summer), Sudden Death Syndrome.
- Action: Reduce stocking density. In summer, feed only during cooler hours (early morning/late evening). Use antioxidants and electrolytes in water.
Late-stage mortality is the most expensive. Every bird that dies at Day 35 costs you over ₹180 in lost investment.
