Neomycin Sulfate
Neomycin Sulfate
Identity
Neomycin Sulfate is an active therapeutic medicine and water-soluble aminoglycoside antibiotic complex used within the poultry sector.
Overview
Neomycin Sulfate is a critical therapeutic antibiotic used in the Indian poultry industry. It is specifically utilized for treating enteric Colibacillosis, a systemic threat caused by the E. coli pathogen, as well as salmonellosis. It is highly polar and exhibits extremely poor absorption (<3%) from the avian gastrointestinal tract, confining almost the entire oral dose to the intestinal lumen. However, any absorbed fraction is excreted via glomerular filtration and concentrates and persists in the renal cortex.
Structured Facts
Indications
Enteric Colibacillosis, E. coli infections, local bacterial enteritis, enterotoxemia, and salmonellosis.
Mechanism of Action
Binds irreversibly to the 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of the genetic code on mRNA. This leads to the synthesis of abnormal, non-functional proteins that insert into the bacterial cell membrane, disrupting its semi-permeable barrier and causing rapid cell lysis.
Dosage
10-30 mg/kg body weight daily.
Administration Route
Water.
Duration
3 to 7 days (or 5 to 7 days for broilers; 14 days for ducks).
Withdrawal Period
7 Days (India relevance); Ducks: 14 days; Broilers: 5 to 7 days; Eggs: 0 days.
