Bell Drinker
Bell Drinker
Identity
The Bell Drinker is an open hydration and watering system utilizing a gravity-fed plastic drinking bell to manually supply water to poultry.
Overview
The Bell Drinker is a low-priority, manual watering system favored in hot climates and breeder-rearing operations for high-capacity, open-surface water access. It operates on a gravity-fed structural spring tension mechanism. However, it presents operational risks due to high water spillage, spring fatigue, and a vulnerability to contamination from litter and dust.
Structured Facts
Classification
Open Hydration and Watering System / Manual
Purpose
High-capacity watering solution, supports flock thermoregulation in hot climates and breeder-rearing operations.
Working Principle
Operates as a gravity-fed open hydration system where structural spring tension is opposed by the weight of water in the trough. As birds consume water, decreased weight causes the mechanical spring to contract, pulling the valve shaft upward to open the water inlet. Water flows down the outer bell surface to replenish the trough. When target depth is reached, the water's weight overcomes spring tension, pulling the valve down to seal the inlet. An internal ballast bottle filled with water prevents swaying.
Technical Specifications
- Outer Lip Circumference (Breeder): 110 cm (44 inches).
- Outer Lip Circumference (Compact): 112 cm (44.1 inches).
- Flexible Feed Tube Dimensions: 5.7 mm ID x 9.0 mm OD.
Capacity
- Standard Stocking Density: 10 to 12 drinkers per 1,000 adult birds.
- Hot Climate Stocking Density: 12 to 14 drinkers per 1,000 adult birds.
Installation Requirements
Suspended from an overhead support line via a spring-loaded valve mechanism. Height must be adjusted continuously using an overhead winch to keep the trough lip slightly higher than the birds' backs. A filter cartridge rated at <= 130 microns must be installed upstream of the header kit.
Operating Parameters
- Breeder Model Operating Pressure: 0.4 to 0.6 Bar (6 to 8 PSI).
- Compact Model Operating Pressure: 0.4 to 0.8 Bar (6 to 12 PSI).
Maintenance
Open trough must be scrubbed manually on a daily basis to remove feed dust and organic matter. Continuous height adjustment required. Internal ballast bottle water level must be maintained to prevent swaying.
Cleaning & Disinfection
Manual daily scrubbing required to clear organic matter.
Advantages
Provides high-capacity watering, supports thermoregulation in hot climates.
Limitations
Vulnerable to contamination from dust, litter, and feces (encourages Escherichia coli). High spillage risk. Mechanical wear or spring fatigue alters trigger threshold, causing persistent overflow or flow failure. Low ballast water causes the unit to swing and spill water when bumped.
